Postdoctoral Opportunities

The laboratory of Synthetic Biology and Regenerative Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh is looking for two postdoc candidates to join our research program on programming multicellular systems and designer organoids. The projects will use synthetic and systems biology to program the development of human tissues. The developed tissues are regenerative, scalable, with a high degree of robustness and functionality. We will also identify novel design principles governing human tissue morphogenesis and cooperative cellular behavior and develop new technologies for high content differentiation control through these projects. The model systems span from in vitro human pluripotent stem cells to mouse models. For more information, please see Cell Syst: 2021 20;12(1):41-55.e11 and Trends Biotechnology: 2018 Apr;36(4):415-429.

The lab is located within the world-class Pittsburgh Liver Research Center (PLRC), home to a cutting-edge interdisciplinary research program on Liver diseases. We are also part of the McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine, Department of Pathology, and Department of Bioengineering. The candidate will have the opportunity to lead cutting edge highly interdisciplinary projects with collaborators at Carnegie Mellon University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of British Columbia, and Johns Hopkins University. You will have the opportunity to spend parts of your studies in the collaborators’ lab to enrich training experience and career development further. The candidate will engage with the stem cell and synthetic biology communities by presenting work at conferences and publishing high-impact papers and patents.

Minimum/Basic Qualifications: MD and/or PhD degree in a related field of study (bioengineering, molecular biology, and/or cell biology). Ability to perform standard molecular biology and mammalian cell culture techniques. Familiarity with synthetic and systems biology techniques, stem cell and organoids, in vivo mouse models, liver biology, and the hematopoietic system is a significant plus. A good track record of publication and ability to lead projects in fast pace environments is needed. Appointment: This position reports to Dr. Mo Ebrahimkhani and is situated at the PLRC and the university’s main campus. It is a full-time, benefits-eligible, fiscal appointment with a flexible start date. It comes with the possibility of annual renewal, dependent on available funding, performance, and the needs of the university. The salary follows the NIH Pay line scales for postdocs. Applications will be reviewed weekly until the search is closed. A background check is required for employment.
