The Wiegand Summer Internship provides an opportunity for a current high school senior, who resides in Allegheny County and who will be graduating in the spring of 2017, to spend five weeks learning first-hand about regenerative medicine research and scientific investigations in general.
The McGowan Institute will tailor the five-week program based on the student’s specific interests. Under the guidance of the McGowan Institute student coordinator, the student will meet with McGowan Institute scientists who are involved in area(s) of interest to the student. During the internship the student will:
- meet with McGowan scientists and discuss the research in their laboratories. Lab tours will be provided, and the scientists will suggest items that should be included in the student’s summary of his/her internship;
- prepare a presentation based on his/her experience at the Institute as well as on the summer camp experience, the visits with the scientists, and the laboratory visits. The McGowan Institute student coordinator will facilitate any questions or clarifications needed; and
- earn recognition for his/her contributions and receive a $1,200 stipend for the internship.
The Wiegand Summer Internship is made possible through an endowment from Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Wiegand, friends and supporters of the Institute. The endowment is designed to provide an opportunity for a high school senior to experience the opportunities and excitement of a career in science and engineering, with a focus on regenerative medicine.
Applications must be postmarked on or before March 31, 2017 and sent to:
