Dr. Augustine Choi is a Professor of Medicine and the Chief of Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Dr. Choi graduated Summa Cum Laude with a BS in Biology from the University of Kentucky and received his MD from the University of Louisville School of Medicine in 1984. He completed his Residency in Internal Medicine in 1987 at the Duke University Medical Center. He then pursued his Pulmonary Fellowship at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine from 1987 - 1990. Prior to arriving at the University, Dr. Choi was an Associate Professor of Medicine and Director of Lung Research in the Section of Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine at Yale University School of Medicine.
Previously, Dr. Choi has held the positions of Assistant Professor and Instructor within the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. In addition, he was a Visiting Scientists within the Laboratory of Molecular Genetics through the NIA/NIH.
Recently he has been featured in several publications for his research, and in 2001, he became a member of the American Society of Clinical Investigation (ASCI). Dr. Choi is also currently an attending clinical instructor for Pulmonary Consultation Service and Medical Intensive Care Unit at Presbyterian University Hospital and Veteran Affairs-Pittsburgh HealthCare Systems in Pittsburgh, PA. He also serves as a Journal Reviewer and presently is a grant reviewer for the ATS/SAC Grant Review Board. In addition, Dr. Choi has served as an invited Professor/ Speaker for several other Universities since 1996.
Currently, Dr. Choi is involved in several pulmonary research programs. As part of his research, he is continually striving to foster a better understanding of various pulmonary disorders, and improve current medicinal practices used to treat lung disease and injury. Programs in which Dr. Choi is currently involved include the following:
- Heme Oxygenase 1 - Lung Vascular Cell Hypoxic Response
- Heme Oxygenase-1 and Sepsis Using Transgenic Mice
- Heme Oxygenase and Hyperoxic Lung Injury
- Molecular Pysiology of the Lung
