Dr. Zenker is a postdoctoral research associate in the Department of Critical Care Medicine and the Department of Mathematics at the University of Pittsburgh. After pursuing his medical education at the university of Bonn, he worked clinically in intensive care medicine and cardiology and completed his dissertation in the field of endocrinology. Switching to part time work in a clinical laboratory enabled him to return to university to study physics and mathematics, transitioning to his current position after completion of the pre-diploma ("Vordiplom") in physics. His research interests are focused on combining mechanistic mathematical modeling, statistics, and advanced data analysis techniques to further understanding of complex physiological processes and more fully exploit physiological observations in both clinical and laboratory settings for diagnosis and prediction. In addition, he is involved in the development and evaluation of novel non-invasive monitoring techniques.
