Marco A. Zenati, M.D., FETCS

Marco ZenatiDr. Marco Zenati is the Director of the Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery Program, and Professor of Surgery, at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He holds a B.Sc. in Biology from Liceo Scientifico Fracastoro, Verona Italy, and received his M.D. from the University of Verona School of Medicine, Verona Italy, in 1986. Following his studies, he joined the University of Pittsburgh for the first time as a Research Fellow from 1988-1989. During that same time, he began a Cardiovacular Surgery Fellowship at the University of Verona in 1986, which he completed in 1991. After residing for two years as a Staff Cardiac Surgeon at the University of Padova Medical Center in Padova, Italy, Dr. Zenati returned to the University of Pittsbrugh as a Cardiothoracic Surgery Fellow in 1993.

Dr. Zenati is also involved in several organizations outside of the university. Presently, he is a guest reviewer for the Annals of Thoracic Surgery, Journal of Immunological Research and Italian Journal of Cardiology. Additionally, he serves as a member of the American Heart Association, European Association for Cardiothoracic Surgery, European Society for Cardiovascular Surgery, European Society for Organ Transplantation, International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation and the Society of Thoracic Surgeons.

Dr. Zenati's major research interests lie in the development of totally endoscopic beating heart, cardiac surgical procedures, robotic haert surgery and atrial fibrillation surgery. In 1988, Dr. Zenatio established a research laboratory to study aerosol cyclosporine for regional immunotherapy in lung transplantation. Within this laboratory, Dr. Zenati is studying the role of lung volume reduction surgery in lung transplant candidates with end-stage emphysema while participating in arrhythmia surgery research at the university.

Clincally, Dr. Zenati's specialty lies in adult cardiac surgery. However, he is also Principal Investigator in 10 clinical and basic research studies at the university. Due to his dedication to his field, he has been featured in several publications and was awarded the Alexis Carrel Young Investigator Research Award (1989), Philip Caves International Award (1990) and the De Gasperis-Donatelli Award (1991). At the present time, in addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Zenati is pursuing research regarding:
