Stephen Winowich

Mr. Stephen Winowich is the Senior Biomedical Engineer and Director of Operations at Vital Engineering. Vital Engineering is a University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) program that offers medical consultation, physician training and patient support regarding the implementation of various Ventricular Assist Devices (VAD) including Novacor VAD and Thoratec VAD use in 1990. Prior to his involvement in the UPMC Artificial Heart program, Mr. Winowich earned his bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from the University of Pittsburgh.

Mr. Winowich is a recognized authority in all of Vital Engineering's core services, including the training of more than 75 centers in the use of VADs and the VAD support of numerous institutions. He has been involved with the Artificial Heart Program at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center for more than 13 years and has participated in the care of more than 200 VAD/TAH patients. Mr. Winowich has been Director of Clinical Bioengineering of the Artificial Heart Program since 1996. Mr. Winowich also has exceptional understanding of the development of new technologies, as seen by his participation in the first HeartMate II implant and his service on the Data Safety and Monitoring Board for the Arrow LionHeart, and continues to play a major role in the development of improved VADs in the future.
