Flordeliza Villanueva, M.D., joined the University of Pittsburgh faculty in 1992 as an Assistant Professor of Medicine. She was a student of a 6-year B.A./M.D. program of Boston University in Boston, Massachusetts, and received her M.D. in 1984. Following the reception of her degree, she completed an Internal Medicine Residency (1984-1987) at Duke University, in Durham, North Carolina, a Cardiology/Transplant Fellowship (1987-1988) at the University of Pittsburgh and a Cardiology Fellowship (1988-1992) at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia. Currently, Dr. Villanueva is an Associate Professor of Medicine and actively involved in both clinical practice and research efforts at the university.
For her excellence in both clinical practice and research, Dr. Villanueva has been featured in several publications. She has also been the recipient of multiple awards, including membership in Phi Beta Kappa and Summa Cum Laude at Boston University, Alpha Omega Alpha (Honor Medical Society) at Boston University School of Medicine, Young Investigator Award from the American Society of Echocardiography (1992) and the Christian Doppler Research Award from the International Society of Intraoperative Cardiac Ultrasound (1992). Most recently, in 1994, she was the recipient of the Young Investigator Award from the American College of Cardiology, Pennsylvania Chapter.
In 2002, she was the recipient of the Feigenbaum Lectureship and Award, one of the most prestigious awards of American Society of Echocardiography, conferred upon a young investigator who has been deemed by the Society to have made major contributions to the field of echocardiography.
Currently, Dr. Villanueva is involved in research concerning the following:
- Development of Targeted Ultrasound Contrast Agents for the Echocardiographic Assessment of Endothelial Function
