Erin A. Sullivan, M.D. arrived at the University of Pittsburgh in 1998 as an Associate Professor of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine within the department of Anesthesiology. She holds a B.S. in biochemistry from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and received her M.D. from the Louisiana State University School of Medicine in 1986. In addition to her professorship, Dr. Sullivan is also the Director of Thoracic Anesthesiology and Director of Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology.
Postgraduate studies included appointments at several institutions throughout the country. Following a one-year internship within the Department of Internal Medicine, Dr. Sullivan served as a resident within the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Texas health Science center, in Houston, Texas, from 1987-1990. During that time, in 1990, she was appointed the Chief resident of the Department of Anesthesiology. In 1990, Dr. Sullivan also completed two one year fellowships; one in Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine within the Department of Anesthesiology, and a research fellowship within the Department of Pharmacology, both at the University of Texas Health Science Center.
Dr. Sullivan held several academic positions prior to joining the faculty of the University of Pittsburgh. Most recently, she spent her time at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), as Assistant Clinical Professor of Anesthesiology (1991-1997), Assistant Residency Program Director (1991-1995), Director of the Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology Fellowship Program (1991-1997), Director of the Anesthesiology Residency Program (1996-1996) and Associate Clinical Professor of Anesthesiology (1997-1998).
Clinically, Dr. Sullivan has also held several appointments. From 1990-1991, she was a member of the Hermann Hospital Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Texas Health Science Center. Immediately, prior to relocating to Pittsburgh, Dr. Sullivan was a member of the UCLA Department of Anesthesiology from 1991-1998.
Dr. Sullivan is certified as a Diplomate of the American Board of Anesthesiology, holds FLEX certification and is presently certified as an ACLS Instructor/Provider. She is also licensed to practice medicine in Louisiana, Texas, California and Pennsylvania and remains actively involved in several professional and scientific societies, including current memberships in the American Society of Anesthesiologists, International Anesthesia Research Society, Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists, American Society of Critical Care Anesthesiologists, American Society of Echocardiography, American Medical Association, American Heart Association, American Society of Regional Anesthesia and the Society for Education in Anesthesia.
Through her research efforts and excellence in clinical practice, Dr. Sullivan has been featured in several publications. She has also been the recipient of numerous awards, including, most recently, nomination for membership on the Test Material Development Committee for the United States Medical Licensing Examination, 3rd Prize awarded for Incorporating the Core Competencies poster presentation competition held at the ACGME 2001 Annual Meeting, Focus on Medical Excellence,University of Pittsburgh Department of Anesthesiology Residency Program Recognition Award and nomination for the University of Pittsburgh School of Nurse Anesthesia Nominee for Outstanding Anesthesiologist Instructor. Currently, she is also a question writer of the American Board of Anesthesiology-American Society of Anesthesiologists Joint Council on In-Training Examinations.
Throughout her career, Dr. Sullivan has held research interests in:
- Regional anesthesia and pain management in patients for cardiothoracic surgery
- Management and treatment of cardiac failure
- Inhalation therapy for treatment ofpulmonary hypertension
- Perioperative management of the patient scheduled for lung volume reduction surgery
- Utilization of artificial blood substitutes to minimize allogeneic blood transfusion in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting
Currently, Dr. Sullivan is involved in the following research projects at the university:
- A Phase II Randomized, Single-blind, Controlled Clinical Trial To Evaluate the Efficacy and Safety of Hemolink (o-raffinose cross-linked human hemoglobin) in Subjects Undergoing Primary Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting
- A Phase III Randomized, Parallel, Double-Blind, Multi-Center, Placebo-Controlled Study of the Effect of Pexelizumab on All Cause Mortality and Myocardial Infarction in Patients Undergoing Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG) Surgery With Cardiopulmonary Bypass
