Dr. David Steed first arrived at the University of Pittsburgh to pursue his M.D. at the School of Medicine after receiving his B.S. in Chemistry from Geneva College in 1969. Following a one year internship in surgery in 1974, he continued with his first residency in surgery from 1974-1976. Shortly after, a research fellowship in Thoracic Surgery followed from 1976-1977, and a second residency in surgery from 1977- 1979 lead to an appointment as both the Administrative Chief Resident of Surgery and Assistant Professor of Surgery. Currently, Dr. Steed resides as a Professor of Surgery and the Director of the Wound Healing/Limb Preservation Clinic at the University of Pittsburgh.
Due to his dedication to his field, Dr. Steed has been the recipient of both the Charles C. Moore Teaching Award (1975,76,79,80) and the Golden Apple Award for Teaching (1984,85). Dr. Steed is also the President of the Wound Healing Society, a member of the International Working Group on the Diabetic Foot, and Clinical Science Editor of Wound Repair and Regeneration.
Dr. Steed is also actively involved in research efforts at the university. Primarily, his interests lie in the area of venous and diabetic foot ulcers. However, through research in a variety of fields, he has been highlighted in several publications. Currently, Dr Steed and his research team are involved in several projects including the following:
- A Prospective Multicenter Open-Label Study to Evaluate the Safety and Efficacy of Apligraf in the Treatment of Venous Leg Ulcers
- Clinical Evaluation of REGRANEXTM (Becaplermin) Gel 0.01% for the Treatment of Full-Thickness Diabetic Neuropathic Foot Ulcers
