Richard D. Schaub, Jr., PhD
Dr. Richard Schaub is an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Bioengineering
at the University of Pittsburgh and an active member of the
Artificial Heart Program at the University of Pittsburgh Medical
Center since 1988. Currently, he is a Senior Biomedical Engineer
at Vital Engineering, an innovative program of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Prior to joining the program, Dr. Schaub earned both
his bachelor's and master's degrees in chemical engineering
as well as his doctorate in bioengineering from the University
of Pittsburgh.
Since joining the Artificial Heart Program, Dr. Schaub has participated in the care of more than 200 Ventricular Assist Device (VAD)/Total Artificial Heart(TAH) patients and accumulated more than 11 years of Intra Aortic Balloon Pump (IABP) experience. In 1998, he was appointed as the Artificial Heart Program's Clinical Research Coordinator. In addition to his VAD/TAH activities, Dr. Schaub is leading Vital Engineering's efforts in the clinical use of other artificial organ technologies. Currently, Dr. Schaub is leading a team of engineers who are supporting clinical trials of a bioartificial liver.
