Major General (Ret.) Gale S. Pollock
Major General (Ret.) Gale Pollock is the executive director of the nation’s first Center for Ocular Regeneration and Vision Restoration (CORVR), a partnership between the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Pittsburgh, the UPMC Health System and the McGowan Institute.  Prior to this, Gen. Pollock served as Deputy Surgeon General and Chief of Army Nursing in the U.S. Army .  Gen. Pollock’s primary focus is to integrate basic and clinical research endeavors at the University with a strong patient focus and to help UPMC to continue to advance the science of vision care.

Gen. Pollock earned her Nursing degree at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Nursing Program at the University of Maryland in 1976.  She received master’s degrees in business administration from Boston University, health care administration from Baylor University, and national security and strategy from the National Defense University.  In 2005, the University of Maryland presented her with an Honorary Doctorate in Public Service.  She is a Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives and a member of the boards of directors of the Tri-Service Nursing Research Program, the Never Forget Foundation, and the Prevention of Blindness Organization. 

Gen. Pollock has had a distinguished U.S. Army career with broad experience in health care administration. She has served as a nurse anesthetist, hospital commander, Chief of the Army Nurse Corps, Deputy Surgeon General, and Acting Surgeon General.  In1993, she earned the Order of Military Medical Merit, and in 2001, the Infantry Association granted her the Order of Saint Maurice.  The American Legion Auxiliary named her their 2007 Woman of the Year, and Baylor University granted her the 2006 Distinguished Alumni Award.
