After receiving a BS in Microbiology at Penn State University, Dr. Julie Phillippi went on to earn her PhD from Carnegie Mellon University. She joined the University of Pittsburgh faculty in 2007. Her current position is Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery.
Dr. Phillippi is a member of International Society for Applied Cardiovascular Biology, The Endocrine Society and a former winner of the Young Investigator Award from the American Society of Bone and Mineral Research. Her research is focused on understanding the cellular and molecular mechanisms of ascending aortic aneurysms in patients with bicuspid aortic valve and other heritable disorders. Specific focus is on smooth muscle cell biology, the extracellular matrix, and oxidative stress response pathways.
