John
N. Murphy is the Executive Director-McGowan Institute for Regenerative
Medicine and Research Professor-Department of Chemical and Petroleum
Engineering. Technical focus is on occupational health and safety
in academic laboratories and for small businesses.
Prior to joining the University of Pittsburgh, Professor Murphy served as Senior Scientist, Pittsburgh Research Laboratory, National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) from 1997 to 2001. He was the Research Director of the Pittsburgh Research Center from 1978 until 1997. Under his direction, the Center the principal research focus of the Center was mine/industrial health and safety, but other studies were directed toward new mining technology and mine environmental issues.
Professor Murphy is a Registered Professional Engineer. He holds two patents and has authored more than 100 technical publications. He is the recipient of the Department of Interior Distinguished Service Award in 1985 and the Presidential Rank award for Meritorious Executive in 1986 and Presidential award for Distinguished Executive in 1993. He is a co-recipient of the 2000 Science and Technology Award for Excellence-for University Teacher presented by the Carnegie Science Center.
