Dr. Ernest K. Manders was born in Ocean Falls, British Columbia, Canada, and immigrated to the United States. Now a naturalized US citizen, Dr. Manders received his undergraduate education at Harvard College. He then attended Harvard Medical School, and after a surgical internship at the University of Michigan, he worked for two years as a Research Associate in the Laboratory of Viral Oncology at the National Institutes of Health. Shortly afterward, Dr. Manders returned to the University of Michigan and completed his training in general surgery and plastic surgery. He then joined the faculty at Penn State University in 1981, rising to the rank of Professor of Surgery and Pediatrics. Dr. Manders joined the University of Pittsburgh faculty in 1997, and currently serves as Professor of Surgery.
At the present time, Dr. Manders is Residency Program Director for the Division of Plastic Surgery, Medical Director of the Facial Nerve Center, Chief of Plastic Surgery at the Oakland VA Hospital and Plastic Surgery Chief of the University of Pittsburgh Cranial Base Surgery Program. Additionally, he is a member of several professional societies, including the American College of Surgeons, the American Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons, the American Association of Plastic Surgeons, the Plastic Surgery Research Council, the James IV Association of Surgeons, the Society of Latin American Plastic Surgeons, and is an honorary member of the Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons of Southern Africa.
Dr. Manders enjoys treating patients with a broad range of problems while teaching in his academic practice in plastic surgery. Due to his expertise in both the laboratory and classroom, he has been featured in several publications. Dr. Manders has authored over 275 articles, abstracts, chapters manuals, videos, and patents. He takes great pride in those whom he has helped train as residents in plastic surgery, half of whom have entered academic surgery, and half of who are successful in private practice. In his last 10 years at Hershey, while serving as Chief of the Division of Plastic Surgery, Dr. Manders won the senior class clinical teaching award three times and was twice invited to be their baccalaureate speaker.
Always on the cutting edge of medical technology, since coming to Pittsburgh Dr. Manders founded Promethean LifeSciences, Inc., a biotech company organized to bring new medical technology to the marketplace. He is also actively involved in research efforts at the university and has recently focused his efforts on continued investigations of the factors affecting blood flow in flaps and new strategies for treating facial nerve disorders. The development of automated facial analysis allowing a continuous tracking of points on the moving face now allows the quantitative measure of facial motion and the effects of treatments of facial palsy. Sophisticated diagnostic abilities and physical therapy have made us one of the best centers for treatment of facial nerve disorders in the world.
