James D. Luketich, M.D., is currently Co-Director of Surgical Affairs at the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute and the Sampson Family Endowed Chair in Thoracic Oncology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He is also an Associate Professor of Surgery, Chief, Division of Thoracic and Foregut Surgery, Co-Director, Lung Cancer Center and Co-Director, Mark Ravitch/Leon C. Hirsch Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.
Dr. Luketich received his medical degree from the Medical College of Pennsylvania in 1986 and completed his general surgery residency in 1992 at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where he was chief resident of surgery from 1992 through 1993. He completed his cardiothoracic and thoracic training at New York Hospital, Cornell Medical Center and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.
Prior to joining University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in 1995, he was a senior instructor in surgery at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. He held academic appointments and positions at Cornell University Medical College and the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Luketich received his medical degree from the Medical College of Pennsylvania in 1986 and completed his general surgery residency in 1992 at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania where he was chief resident of surgery from 1992 through 1993. He completed his cardiothoracic and thoracic training at New York Hospital Cornell Medical Center and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.
Dr. Luketich's particular areas of research interest include all aspects of thoracic oncology (lung cancer, mediastinal malignancies and esophageal cancer), as well as, benign esophageal disorders. He has particular expertise in the multidisciplinary management (combined chemotherapy/radiation/surgery) of esophagogastric carcinoma and lung cancer. He also performs numerous complex operations using minimally invasive surgical techniques. These include minimally invasive surgery for gastroesophageal reflux disease, lung cancer, esophageal cancer, achalasia and giant paraesophageal hernia. He has been the principal investigator and co-investigator on numerous research grants and has published over 200 papers, abstracts and book chapters.
Dr. Luketich is the principal investigator or co-investigator on numerous research grants and his research has been featured in over 200 publications. The professional and scientific societies to with Dr. Luketich is a member include the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, Society of Surgical Oncology, American Thoracic Society, Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons, and American College of Gastroenterology, among many others.
