Dr. Youhua Liu began his early career as an NIH Fogarty visiting fellow at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences. Following that fellowship, he worked as a research associate in the Department of Pathology at the University of Pittsburgh from 1992-1994. After accepting a five year appointment at the Rhode Island Hospital and Brown University School of Medicine (1994-1999), Dr. Liu returned to Pitt and is currently a professor of Pathology with tenure.
Dr. Liu holds an MS degree from the China Medical University in cell biology. His PhD is also in cell biology and was received from the Peking Union Medical College in Beijing, China.
Dr. Liu is the recipient of the National Institutes of Health Independent Scientist Award, 1999-2004. He also received the American Society of Nephrology M. James Scherbenske Grant in 1996.
Research interests for Dr. Liu are as follows:
- Hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) and its receptor
- Pathogenesis of chronic renal fibrosis
- Regulation of epithelial to mesenchymal transition
- Therapeutic intervention of chronic renal diseases
