Dr. Douglas Kondziolka
Dr. Douglas Kondziolka joined the faculty of the University of Pittsburgh in 1992 and is currently the Peter J. Jannetta Professor and vice chairman of education in Neurological Surgery. He is also a professor of Radiation Oncology and director of the Center for Image-Guided Neurosurgery. In addition to his duties at the University, Dr. Kondziolka is the team neurosurgeon for the Pittsburgh Penguins hockey team.Following the receipt of his MD from the University of Toronto, Dr. Kondziolka went on to earn a Masters of Science from the University of Pittsburgh in the Department of Behavioral Neuroscience and also completed a fellowship in Stereotactic Surgery and Radiosurgery.
Dr. Kondziolka’s laboratory studies the radiobiological effects of radiosurgery on normal brain and brain tumor models. He has also evaluated the effects of radiosurgery as a treatment for epilepsy. Dr. Kondzioloka served as principal investigator of the first two clinical neurotransplantation trials for the care of patients with stroke and has clinical interests in brain tumor management, movement disorder surgery, Gamma Knife® radiosurgery of vascular malformations, tumors, and functional disorders, trigeminal neuralgia, and neurorestoration. Special areas of interest include acoustic neuromas and brain metastases.
Dr. Kondziolka is the recipient of several prominent awards including the Lars Leksell Award from the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies and the Robert Florin and Integra Foundation Awards from the American Association of Neurological Neurosurgeons. He is a two-time recipient of the Stephen Mahaley Award for brain tumor clinical research from the Joint Section on Tumors of the AANS/CNS and was the 2004 Penfield Lecturer of the Canadian Neurosurgical Society. His record of personal publications includes numerous articles in refereed journals as well as book chapters and/or invited publications. He is the principal editor for the journal Neurosurgery.
