Dr. Abhinav Humar is the chief of transplantation and a staff physician at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. He is also a Professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Prior to this he was a Professor and the Medical Director for the Living Donor Transplant Program at the University of Minnesota.
Dr. Humar got his medical degree from the University of Ottawa, from which he graduated magna cum laude and was the silver medalist of his class. After completing several fellowships at the University of Ottawa and the University of Western Ontario, Dr. Humar earned a research and clinical fellowship at the University of Minnesota in 1996.
Dr. Humar focuses his research on partial liver transplants and studies of hepatic regeneration; clinical outcome studies in kidney, liver, and pancreas transplants; CMV disease in transplant recipients, including prophylaxis, treatment, and clinical predictors; and outcomes in pediatric kidney and liver transplant recipients. His clinical interests include adult abdominal transplants (kidney, liver, pancreas, and bowel); pediatric kidney, liver, and bowel transplants; living-related liver transplants; split liver transplants; hepatobiliary surgery; and vascular surgery.
Dr. Humar was selected as a Top Doctor in Minneapolis-St. Paul Magazine in 2005, 2006, and 2007. He is on the editorial board for Liver Transplantation and is the Associate Editor of Clinical Transplantation. Also, Dr. Humar is involved in the development of the liver transplant program at a large teaching hospital in Mumbai, India.
