Raphael Hirsch, M.D.

Dr. Hirsch received his MD from the University of Illinois at Chicago. He was also a professor of pediatrics with tenure at the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center and the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.

At Pitt, Dr. Hirsch leads an NIH-funded research program focused on answering fundamental questions about arthritis.  His research concentrates on gene transfer, gene expression in arthritis, modulation of T-cell immune responses and the therapy of autoimmune diseases. The NIH has continuously funded Dr. Hirsch since 1992. In addition, his work has received support from the Arthritis Foundation, the American College of Rheumatology, and the Ohio Cancer Research Associates.

Among other honors, Dr. Hirsch was named a “Young Turk” of the prestigious American Society for Clinical Investigation in 2004.  He is board-certified in pediatrics and pediatric rheumatology and serves on the education committee of the American College of Rheumatology.
