Dr. Glenn Gobbel joined the University of Pittsburgh Department of Neurological Surgery as an Assistant
Professor in July of 1999. After receiving his undergraduate degree in neurobiology from the University
of Florida in 1980, he also earned his D.V.M. from the University of Florida in 1985. After two years of
clinical practice in veterinary medicine, he returned to graduate school and obtained his Ph.D. in biophysics
from the University of California, San Francisco in 1991. He received a two year fellowship from the American
Brain Tumor Association in 1991, and was a post-doctoral fellow of the Brain Tumor Research Center at the
University of California, San Francisco, from 1991-1994 and an Assistant Research Biophysicist from 1994-1999.
Dr. Gobbel is actively involved with an accomplished research team centered in the Laboratory for Radiobiology. His primary research interests focus on the cellular and molecular mechanisms of oxidative damage to the central nervous system. However, he is also studying the potential role of neural stem cells in ameliorating CNS tissue injury. As a result of his research efforts, Dr. Gobbel has been featured in more than 31 publications, several articles in refereed journals and two book chapters. For more information on one of the projects in which Dr. Gobbel is currently involved, please select one of the following:
- Enhancement of radiosurgical effects on brain tumors using neural stem cell-based gene expression
- Role of neural precursors in radiation- induced brain injury
- Engineering neural progenitor cells for the treatment of central nervous system disorders
- Molecular effects of radiation on young brain
