Burhan Gharaibeh, PhD

Dr. Burhan GharaibehDr. Burhan Gharaibeh is a research assistant professor within the Stem Cell Research Center, part of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh. Other positions prior to his current appointment include postdoctoral fellow in the Graduate School of Public Health at the University and research associate in Hematology/Oncology at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh.

Dr. Gharaibeh received his MD from Texas Tech University in 1997.  He also has an MSc in Zoology and a BSc in Biological Sciences, both from Yarmouk University in Jordan.  In addition, he served as a teaching assistant and lecturer at that facility.

Dr. Gharaibeh’s research interests involve muscle derived stem cells that are isolated from the skeletal muscles by modification of the preplate technique.  One project making use of this technique is investigating the injured skeletal muscles in Duchenne muscular dystrophy.  Donor cells of either non-engineered adult stem cells or engineered cells with reporter genes are injected, and the non-engineered cells are then tracked in the recipient tissues to see if they proliferate, develop chromosomal abnormalities, or fuse with the host nuclei.

Dr. Gharaibeh is a member of the American Orthopedic Society and the International Stem Cell Research Society International Committee.  He also participates in community outreach by presenting popular scientific lectures on the topic of stem cells, bioethics, and regenerative medicine to various high schools and adult education programs in the area.
