Jie Fan, M.D.

Dr. Jie Fan is an Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, and an Affiliate Faculty Member of McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine. Dr. Fan is also the Director of the Multidisciplinary Surgery Research Program at VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System. Prior to coming to the University of Pittsburgh, Dr. Fan was an Associate Professor of Pathophysiology in Tongji University College of Medicine, Research Scientist in Medical Science Center of University of Toronto, and Assistant Professor of Pharmacology in University of Illinois Chicago. Dr. Fan received his M.S. and M.D. from Second Military Medical University and Shanghai Second Medical University. He completed his post-doctoral fellowship at the State University of New York at Stony Brook.

Dr. Fan has long been focusing on cellular and molecular mechanisms of cell priming in sepsis and organ injury. He is a Principal Investigator of several research projects supported by the Federal grants (NHLBI, NIGMS and Department of Veterans Affairs). His team has explored a number of novel mechanisms of receptor crosstalk and cell-cell interaction underlying post-shock systemic inflammation and organ injury, and has been featured in numerous publications. Dr. Fan also serves as a reviewer and editorial board member of more than 30 journals and a grant reviewer for US and British funding organizations, as well as an advisory peer reviewer for American Institution of Biological Sciences. Dr. Fan presented lectures in many national and international institutes and conferences, and contributed invited review articles for journals and book chapters for textbooks. Dr. Fan is a recipient of Excellence in Government Award – Outstanding Contribution to Medical Science (2010). The research projects in Dr. Fan's laboratory include:

  • Receptor cross talk mechanisms of endothelial cell priming in acute lung injury
  • Regulation of neutrophil migration by Toll-like receptor signaling
  • Cell-cell interacting mechanism of alveolar macrophage priming
