Dr. Steven DeKosky first arrived at the University of Pittsburgh in 1990 as the Co-Director of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) Alzheimer's Disease Research Center. At that time he also held the position of Professor of Psychiatry, Neurology, and Neurobiology within the School of Medicine and Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic. From 1992 to 2000, he served as the Director of the Division of Geriatrics and Neuropsychiatry within the Department of Psychiatry. Currently, Dr. DeKosky is a Professor within the Department of Genetics at the Graduate School of Public Health. In addition, he was promoted to Director of the Alzheimer's Disease Research Center and also serves as the Chairman of the Department of Neurology.

Dr. DeKosky holds an A.B. in Psychology from Bucknell University and pursued his graduate studies in Psychology and Neuroscience at the University of Florida. In 1974, he received his M.D. from the University of Florida College of Medicine. Following the completion of an internship in internal medicine at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in 1975, he returned to the University of Florida College of Medicine as a resident in Neurology. In1979, Dr. DeKosky completed his studies with a one year Post-Doc study in Neurochemistry at the University of Virginia.

Previously, Dr. DeKosky has served as the chairman of the American Academy of Neurology Section on Geriatrics, the Alzheimer's Association Medical and Scientific Advisory Council, and the National Institute on Aging (NIA)-Neuroscience Study Section. Immediately prior to arriving at the University, he served as the Staff Neurologist for the VA Medical Center in Lexington, KY, and resided at the University of Kentucky. During his time there, he held the positions of Associate Professor of Neurology and Anatomy and Neurobiology, Co-Director of the Alzheimer's Disease Research Center, Interim Chairman within the Department of Neurology and Director of the Neurology Residency Training Program.

However, Dr. DeKosky is also an active research investigator at the University and has been featured in several publications for his works. His major interests include aging and Alzheimer's disease, CNS regeneration and response to injury. Within his laboratory, CNS trauma and the efforts of the brain to self repair after such injury are examined, including the response of growth factors, interleukins and amyloid. Currently, the projects in which Dr. DeKosky is involved include:

  • ADRC--Administrative Core
  • ADRC-Clinical Core
  • Ginkgo Biloba Prevention Trial in Older Individuals
  • Alzheimer's Disease Cooperative Study Unit
  • Neurobiology of Mild Cognitive Impairment in Aging
  • Molecular Mechanisms in Traumatic Brain Injury: Bench to Bedside-Project 2
  • Clinical Epidemiology of Dementia in General Practice
  • PET Tracers to Monitor Vaccine and Immune Therapy for AD
