Bernard J. Costello, MD, DMD, FACS
Dr. Bernard Costello is an Associate Professor and the Residency Program Director in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh.  He is chief surgeon with the University’s Cleft and Craniofacial Center and is Co-Director of the School of Dental Medicine Dentofacial Interdisciplinary Team.  Dr. Costello is also the Fellowship Program Director of Craniofacial Surgery, School of Dental Medicine.  In addition, he is an Associate Professor at the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, Department of Pediatric Surgery/Pediatric Dentistry. 

Dr. Costello earned his Bachelor’s in Biological Science from the University of Scranton.  He then achieved his DMD and MD successively from the University of Pennsylvania.  Following his internship and residency (including a year as Chief Resident) at the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Costello won the Craniofacial Fellowship at the Posnick Center for Facial Surgery, Georgetown University Medical Center.

Currently, Dr. Costello is Co-Investigator on two grants: Novel Synthetic Bone Craniofacial Regeneration, which is funded by the Department of Defense, and Bone Tissue Engineering Using Natural Materials, which is funded by the Pennsylvania Department of Health.  He is Principal Investigator of a study on Tissue Adhesives and a study on Craniosyntosis Research.

Dr. Costello is a founding member of the Airway Treatment Center and Team at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh and of the Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment Center of Magee Womens Hospital.  When not working, he serves on the Board of Directors of Every Child, Inc., a non-profit that supports children in need, as well as on the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
