Tao Cheng, M.D.
Dr. Tao Cheng is an Associate Professor of Radiation Oncology at the University of Pittsburgh.  He is also the co-leader of the Cancer Stem Cell Program at the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute.  Prior to his arrival to Pittsburgh, Dr. Cheng was an instructor at Harvard Medical School and a Staff Scientist at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Dr. Cheng attended the Second Military Medical University in Shanghai, China, where he earned two medical degrees in Clinical Medicine and Internal Medicine (Hematology).  Following his studies, he first did his residency in internal medicine and then his clinical fellowship in hematology at Changhia Hospital in Shanghai.  Upon completion, Dr. Cheng moved to the United States, where he won a research fellowship in molecular biology at the Hipple Cancer Research Center in Dayton, Ohio.  After this he earned research fellowships in hematopoiesis and in stem cell biology and HIV pathogenesis at New England Deaconess Hospital and at Massachusetts General Hospital, respectively.

Dr. Cheng has received numerous awards during his career, including the Junior Faculty Award of the American Society of Hematology (2003), the PNC Foundation Innovative Award (2003), and the Outstanding Award for Chinese Oversea Scholar by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (2002), amongst others.  Most recently, Dr. Cheng was selected to receive the Scholar Award from the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The award consists of $550,000 over 5 years and is given to highly qualified investigators who have shown a capacity for independent, sustained, original investigation in the field of leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma.

In addition to his research and teaching activities, Dr. Cheng is an active member in several prestigious organizations, including: the American Association for Cancer Research, the International Society for Stem Cell Research, the American Society of Gene Therapy, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.  He is an elected member of Experimental Hematology, which is the official journal of the International Society for Experimental Hematology.  He also serves as an ad hoc reviewer of the journal Nature.  He has been the Vice Chairman of the Scientific Board of Shanghai Cord Blood Bank since 2005, and he has two patents pending.
