John Martin Chadam, Ph.D.
Dr. John Chadam is a Professor of Mathematics at the University of Pittsburgh. Prior to this he was the Scientific Director and President at The Fields Institute for Research in the Mathematical Sciences at the University of Waterloo and University of Toronto as well as a Professor of Mathematical Sciences at McMaster University.
Dr. Chadam achieved an Honors BA in Mathematics at St. Michael’s College, University of Toronto. He then went to MIT, where he earned his PhD. In 2002 he was granted the honorary title of Fields Institute Fellow. He has served as editor of the Canadian Applied Math Quarterly, Dynamics of Continuous, Discrete and Impulsive Systems, Advances in Mathematical Sciences and Applications, and the European Journal of Applied Mathematics.
Dr. Chadam’s research specialization is Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations and Their Applications, including Free Boundary Problems. In this, a full spectrum of methods, including functional analytic, asymptotic, and numerical simulation, are used to study a wide range of mathematical problems from science, engineering, and industry. Some specific problems that are currently under investigation include the dynamics of petroleum reservoirs and waste repositories, the oscillatory zoning of plagioclase feldspars, bioremediation of waste sites, localized chemical reactions, ESSR dating of prehistoric artifacts, and the pricing of financial derivatives in the asset, bond, and credit markets.
