Dr. Nathan Bahary is an assistant professor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Oncology at the University of Pittsburgh. He is also an assistant professor in Molecular Genetics and Biochemistry and works with the Interdisciplinary Biomedical Graduate Program.
After completing his undergraduate work at Cornell University, Dr. Bahary went on to earn his MD at the Cornell University School of Medicine in 1989 and his PhD at Rockefeller University in 1992. For postgraduate study, he was a clinical fellow at the Harvard Medical School and served as an intern and resident in internal medicine at the Beth Israel Hospital. He also spent additional time as a postdoc at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Brigham and Women's Hospital, both in Boston. Prior to arriving at Pitt, Dr. Bahary held a position as an instructor in medicine at the Harvard Medical School.
With a a broad background in cancer genetics, developmental biology, molecular biology, and clinical investigations, he has a focused interest in integrating basic science aspects of Gastrointestinal (GI) development into the clinical realm. Within the laboratory, he uses the zebrafish model system both to define critical GI developmental regulators, and as a model system for human diseases. He has also designed and implemented clinical trials in both the colorectal and pancreatic malignancy programs, and is the academic principal investigator for the colon and pancreatic cancer treatment programs at UPMC.
