Dr. James Antaki holds two adjunct positions at the University of Pittsburgh, one in the Department of Surgery and one in Bioengineering. His main academic appointment is at Carnegie Mellon University where he is an associate professor in Biomedical Engineering.
Dr. Antaki received a BS from the University of Pittsburgh in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering. He went on to earn his PhD at the University as well and has been involved in artificial heart research since the first implantation of the Jarvik-7 in Pittsburgh in 1985.
Research activity in Dr. Antaki’s lab focused on the artificial heart is aimed at improving the design of existing artificial heart devices and developing a novel magnetically-levitated, computer optimized blood pump: the Streamliner artificial heart. One of the aspects of this research is the concept of coupling computer optimization with fluid dynamics analysis.
Other ongoing projects include the study of blood rheology and damage, and the development of a surgical brachytherapy device for implantation of radioactive seeds.
Among many honors received by Dr. Antaki is the 2003 H. Koyanagi Young Investigator Award by the 11th Congress of The International Society for Rotary Blood Pumps. He is also a Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering. Dr. Antaki holds or has applied for at least 21 patents and has a prodigious record of publications.
