Dr. Thomas Gleason is the Ronald V. Pellegrini Endowed Professor and Chair of Cardiothoracic Surgery and Chief, Division of Cardiac Surgery, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. In addition, he is a member of the Center for Vascular Remodeling and Regeneration at Pitt. He is also the Director of the Center for Thoracic Aortic Disease and the Co-Director of the Center for Heart Valve Disease at the Heart, Lung and Esophageal Surgery Institute, both at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Dr. Gleason serves as the Chief, Division of Cardiovascular Surgery, UPMC Shadyside Hospital. Prior to coming to Pittsburgh, he was an Assistant Professor of Surgery, Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery, at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago. He has also worked as an Instructor and Assistant Professor at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.
Dr. Gleason got his BA in Chemistry at Middlebury College in Vermont. He then earned his MD from Rush Medical College in Chicago and his MS in Surgery/Immunology from the University of Virginia. He is certified with the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery.
Dr. Gleason’s current clinical and research interests include thoracic aortic disease management, aortic dissection, ascending aortic (vascular) biology, bicuspid valve associated aortopathy, valve-sparing aortic root reconstruction, aortic and mitral valve repair, endovascular aortic stent grafting, transcatheter aortic valve replacement/implantation, aortic root and aortic arch surgery, surgery for atrial fibrillation, off-pump coronary revascularization, heritable disorders of the thoracic aorta (bicuspid aortic valve, Marfan syndrome, Loeys-Dietz syndrome, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome), and cardiac and aortic infections.
Dr. Gleason is a member of several professional and scientific societies, including the International Society of Heart and Lung Transplantation, the American Medical Association, and the Muller-Jones Society. He serves as a reviewer for Annals of Thoracic Surgery, Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, and Journal of American College of Cardiology, and others.
In 2010, Dr. Gleason received the UPMC/Heart, Lung and Esophageal Surgery Institute Cardiothoracic Surgical Faculty of the Year Award and in 2012 and 2013 was named to Pittsburgh Magazine’s “Best Doctors,” Thoracic Surgery.
