Dr. Sandeep Kathju is an Associate Professor with the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in its Department of Plastic Surgery. He also serves as the Chief of Plastic Surgery and the Medical Director of the Wound Healing Center, both appointments at UPMC Passavant Hospital. In addition, he is the Co-Medical Director of the Wound Healing Center at UPMC McKeesport Hospital. Prior to working at Pitt and UPMC, Dr. Kathju was an Assistant Professor at Drexel University as well as an Attending Surgeon at Allegheny General Hospital where he served as Teaching Attending for numerous surgical residents, medical students, and undergraduates.
Dr. Kathju earned his BA in Biology from The Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. He then went to the University of Michigan, where he achieved first his MD and then his PhD in Cellular and Molecular Biology. Post-graduation, Dr. Kathju completed an Internship in General Surgery at Huntington Memorial Hospital, Pasadena, CA; a Residency in Otolaryngology at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, Boston, MA; a Residency in Plastic Surgery at UPMC; a Visiting Fellowship in Head and Neck Oncologic Surgery at Tata Memorial Cancer Centre, Bombay, India; and a Visiting Fellowship in Plastic Surgery at Sion Hospital and Wadia Children’s Hospital, Bombay, India. In 2013 he completed the Marshall W. Webster Physician Leadership and Development Program.

bacterial biofilms in medical device-related infections
probiotic therapy in wound management
molecular mechanisms governing craniosynostosis
novel approaches to hernia repair and abdominal wall reconstruction
He is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the Plastic Surgery Research Council, the Wound Healing Society, and the American Medical Association. Dr. Kathju is the recipient of many awards, most recently the Hardesty Award from the Plastic Surgery Research Council (2006) and the Triological Society Career Development Award (2004). He is an Ad Hoc Reviewer for Science Translational Medicine, Wound Repair and Regeneration, Laryngoscope, Pharmocological Research, Acta Biomaterialia, Biochimica Biophysica Acta, amongst others.
