Dr. Ranieri Cancedda, Professor of Cell Biology and past Dean of the Biotechnology School at the University of Genova, Italy, is the founder of the University of Genova spin off company Biorigen Srl. He also served as Coordinator of the PhD program in Biotechnology in Translational Medicine in the same university and as Head of the Laboratory of Regenerative Medicine (Cell Differentiation) of the San Martino-IST National Cancer Research Institute, Genova. He has been the Chairman of the College of the Deans of the Biotechnology Schools of the Italian Universities. Prior to this he was the Chairman of the Department of Innovative Therapies, and the Vice Scientific Director of the National Cancer Research Institute, Genova.
Dr. Cancedda graduated magna cum laude from the University of Genova, Italy, where he earned his MD degree. He then won a WHO fellowship to Nigeria at the University of Ibadan, Department of Hematology. He also did postdoctoral work as a Research Associate in the Department of Microbiology, Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri, and was a Visiting Professor at the Roche Institute of Molecular Biology, Nutley, New Jersey. He served as professor of General Biology and Chairman of the Department of Cellular and Molecular Biochemistry at the second Medical School, Naples, Italy.
Dr. Cancedda has spent most of his professional career in studying and developing methods of tissue reconstruction using stem cells, biomaterials, and active biomolecules such as growth factors and angiogenic molecules and is considered in academic circles as one of the forefathers of tissue engineering. He has been invited as keynote speaker and lecturer at many international congresses and meetings, is the author of more than 300 publications in scientific journals (h-index 77; citations >24,000), and inventor in 9 patents.
He is one of the founders and the first President of the European Tissue Engineering Society, which is now the European Chapter of the Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine International Society (TERMIS). Dr. Cancedda is currently a Fellow of TERMIS.
Dr. Cancedda is Field Chief Editor of Frontiers in Bioengineering and Biotechnology (Nature group) and Specialty Chief Editor of the Regenerative Medicine and Tissue Engineering section. He serves as an Editorial Board Member of several other peer-reviewed journals.
