Dr. Norihisa Shigemura is an Associate Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery in the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC). He is also the Director of the Integrated Lung Transplant Research Program in the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at UPMC.
From 1989-2006, Dr. Shigemura completed his MD and PhD schooling in Japan with the last year spent in Hong Kong, China. His residency training focused on cardiovascular and thoracic education. Post graduation, he held positions of staff surgeon, surgical fellow/chief researcher, and clinical fellow. In 2007, he spent a year as a clinical instructor at UPMC’s Heart, Lung and Esophageal Surgery Institute. After spending a year as an Assistant Professor at Osaka University Graduate School of Medicine, Department of General Thoracic Surgery, Osaka, Japan, he returned to UPMC.
Dr. Shigemura is a member of the American College of Chest Physicians, the International Society of Heart and Lung Transplantation Surgeons, and the Society of Thoracic Surgeons. He is the recipient of several prestigious awards: Ozawa University Prize 2005 for a surgeon with the most outstanding academic achievement in Osaka University; selected as one of the 100 most outstanding academic researchers for work in Osaka University in 2005 and 2006; the Top Five Posters Award at CHEST 2011 – American College of Chest Physicians, Honolulu, HI; and a semi-finalist nominee for the Young Investigator Award CHEST 2012 - American College of Chest Physicians, Atlanta, GA. He has also recently received the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Research Award 2017. Dr. Shigemura is an active reviewer for many professional journals, including but not limited to, the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care of Medicine, the Annals of Thoracic Surgery, the American Journal of Transplantation, and Transplantation.
