Dr. Mark Mooney is the Professor and Chair of the Department of Oral Biology in the School of Dental Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh. He holds secondary appointments at the University of Pittsburgh in the Department of Anthropology, Faculty of Arts and Science, the Department of Orthodontics, School of Dental Medicine, the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, School of Medicine, the Department of Communication Science and Disorders, School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, the Clinical and Translational Science Institute, School of Medicine, and the McGowan Institute of Regenerative Medicine. He was Director of the Surgical Anatomy Laboratory and Posvar Hall Animal Care Facility, Departments of Anthropology and Oral Biology, and the Director of the Oral Biology Graduate Program, School of Dental Medicine.
Dr. Mark Mooney attended Western Illinois University in Macomb, Illinois, where he received his BS in Psychology and Zoology and his MS in Biological Psychology. He then went on to receive his PhD at the University of Pittsburgh in Physical Anthropology.
Dr. Mooney is member of the American Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Association (2013 President), the American Association of Physical Anthropologists, the American Association of Dental Research, the International Association of Dental Research, Omicron Kappa Upsilon, Beta Chapter, National Dental Honor Society (Honorary), the Plastic Surgery Research Council, and the American Dental Education Association. Most recently in 2012 he received the International Association of Dental Research Distinguished Scientist Award for Craniofacial Biology Research.
Throughout the length of his career, Dr. Mark Mooney has written over 400 publications and abstracts and made over 450 national/international presentations. His current research interests include:

Bone tissue engineering
Phenotypic variability and morphology in individuals with craniofacial anomalies
Evolutionary changes in the primate craniofacial complex
Biological and cultural adaptations to extreme environments
