Dr. Gerald Schatten is the Director, Pittsburgh Development Center of Magee-Womens Research Institute; the Deputy Director, Magee-Womens Research Institute; a Tenured Endowed Professor and the Vice Chair of Obstetrics, Gynecology, & Reproductive Sciences, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine; the Director, Division of Developmental & Regenerative Medicine, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine; a Professor of Cell Biology & Physiology, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine; and a Professor of Bioengineering, School of Engineering, University of Pittsburgh.
Dr. Schatten holds a PhD from the University of California, Berkeley, and completed postdoctoral fellowships in reproductive biology at the Rockefeller Foundation and cancer biology at the German Cancer Research Center in Heidelberg, Germany.
Dr. Schatten's research focuses on understanding human reproduction and development and making contributions to molecular medical therapies by determining stem cell potentials and accelerating gene therapy. His current efforts include:

Dr. Schatten is the recipient of various awards and honors including selection as a Pioneer in Human Embryonic Stem Cell Biomedicine by Stanford University in 2005 and being named a Council Member by the National Institute of Aging in 2006. For NASA, he is a member of its Developmental Biology Advisory Panel: Space Station Freedom, and its Space Station Biological Research Advisory Panel. He is the elected president, ASRM Special Interest Group on Regenerative Medicine (2009), the president of UNESCO’s International Cell Research Organization (2010), and the recipient of the Shield of Honor in Reproductive Medicine, Awarded by Jordanian Society of Fertility and Genetics, presented by H.R.H. Princess Basma, Amman, Jordan (2011).
Dr. Schatten has authored or co-authored over 300 publications on fertilization, cell biology, development, infertility, and assisted reproductive technologies.
