Stephen Badylak: Singularity Summit Speaker on Regenerative Medicine

During the recently held Singularity Summit, McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine deputy director Stephen Badylak, DVM, PhD, MD, professor in the Department of Surgery and director of the Center for Pre-Clinical Tissue Engineering within the McGowan Institute, presented his insights on regenerative medicine, specifically using extracellular matrix (ECM) as a treatment in the reconstruction of the esophagus. As reported by Jeremy Hsu of Innovation News Daily the summit buzzed with optimism about technology's ability to reshape the world to exceed humanity's wildest dreams, as well as a desire to share that vision with everyone.

During his presentation, Dr. Badylak explained that regenerative medicine success has come from using a special connective tissue — called the ECM — to act as a biological scaffold for healthy cells to build upon.

"What we're talking about here is not necessarily increasing the quantity of life but the quality of life," said Dr. Badylak.
