Wiegand Internship
Program Synopsis

The McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine is developing therapies in the areas of Tissue Engineering and Biomaterials, Cell-Based Therapies, and Medical Devices and Artificial Organs.

The Wiegand Summer Internship provides an opportunity for a high school senior, who resides in Allegheny County and who will be graduating in the spring of 2010, to spend four weeks learning first-hand about regenerative medicine research and scientific investigations in general. The outline of the program is as follows:

The McGowan Institute will tailor the four-week program based on the student's specific interests. Under the guidance of the McGowan Institute student coordinator, the student will meet with McGowan Institute scientists who are involved in area(s) of interest to the student.  During the internship the student will:

  • serve as a student aide for approximately one week at a tissue engineering summer camp for middle school students;

  • meet with McGowan scientists and discuss the research in their laboratories.  Lab tours will be provided, and the scientists will suggest items that should be included in the student's summary of his/her internship;

  • conduct independent library studies with the assistance of the student coordinator;

  • prepare a presentation based on his/her experience at the Institute as well as on the summer camp experience, the visits with the scientists, and the laboratory visits.  The McGowan Institute student coordinator will facilitate any questions or clarifications needed; and

  • earn recognition for his/her contributions and receive a $1,200 stipend for the internship.  The McGowan Institute student coordinator will explore future science-based student employment opportunities for the student, but future involvement is not a part of the Wiegand endowment program.

The Wiegand Summer Internship is made possible through an endowment from Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Wiegand, friends and supporters of the Institute. The endowment is designed to provide an opportunity for a high school senior to experience the opportunities and excitement of a career in science and engineering, with a focus on regenerative medicine.
