Strom, Ph.D.

Title: "Cell Therapy of Liver Disease; Hepatocytes to Stem Cells"

Description: In this presentation, Dr. Strom will briefly review his work with the transplantation off hepatocytes into patients with different types of liver disease. He will then discuss the problems associated with hepatocyte transplantation and suggests possible new sources of hepatocytes from stem cells.

Stoltz, Ph.D.

Title: "Revascularization Events During Liver Regeneration"

Description: Healthy liver has a remarkable capacity to rapidly regeneratae following injury. For instance, following 70% partial hepatectomy in rats, the liver will regenerate its original mass within a week after resection. In order to accomplish this feat, the various cells within the liver follow a specifcially orchestrated series of proliferative and migratory events to reform native liver architecture. Growth factor involvement and sources of cells during liver revascularization will be
discussed in detail.

Liu, Ph.D.

Title: "Kidney regeneration after injury"

Description: Kidney possesses a regenerative ability leading to a complete recovery of renal structure and function after acute injury.  This lecture will cover the pathobiology of acute renal injury and discuss the therapeutic strategies to accelerate renal regeneration.  New developments including growth factor gene therapy and stem cell biology will be highlighted.

Marra, M.D.

Title: "The Differentiation of Adipose-Derived Adult Stem Cells for Hard and Soft Tissue Regeneration."

Description: The use of liposuctioned fat as a source of autogous stem cells is both exciting and attractive. Our laboratory is isolating, characterizing, and differentiating adipose-derived stem cells into osteoblasts, adipocytes, chondrocytes, and neuronal progenitor cells for tissue engineering applications.
