Please Note: A major reconstruction project has begun at the interchange between the Boulevard of the Allies (state Route 885) and Forbes Avenue at the western border of the Pittsburgh Campus. Slated for completion in Spring 2009, this $29 million project will replace several deteriorated roads, bridges, and ramps and create a better, safer entrance to the Oakland area from Downtown Pittsburgh.
Construction will require detours and lane restrictions and, in 2008, the closure of part of the Boulevard of the Allies. The nonprofit Oakland Transportation Management Association has maps and travel suggestions at its Web site.
In addition, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is currently repaving 4.4 miles of the Parkway East (Interstate 376), a major access route to the Oakland section of the city. Work on this $39 million project is limited to nights and weekends, but does require periodic lane restrictions and ramp closures. Visit PennDOT’s Web site for details.
